President-elect Donald Trump signaled plans to issue mass pardons for individuals involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot and vowed to restructure the \u201cDemocrat-controlled\u201d Department of Justice.<\/p>\n
Trump made these remarks just over an hour after President Joe Biden pardoned his son, Hunter, on Sunday night.<\/p>\n
\u201cDoes the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!\u201d Trump posted on Truth Social.<\/p>\n
The president-elect is correct in his statement. Several people arrested on various charges nearly four years ago are being held without bond and still do not have court dates, which appears to be an obvious violation of the Sixth Amendment\u2019s right to a speedy trial, among other guarantees.<\/p>\n
Trump, who regained the White House last month, announced plans to pardon more than 1,500 individuals involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot\u2014covering both those awaiting trial and those already convicted\u2014during his campaign. This declaration came while Congress was in the midst of certifying President Biden\u2019s victory in the 2020 election over Trump.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Trump\u2019s transition team released a statement that criticized the Justice Department and pledged to reform the federal agency, though the statement did not mention Biden or his son.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe failed witch hunts against President Trump have proven that the Democrat-controlled DOJ and other radical prosecutors are guilty of weaponizing the justice system,\u201d Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung said. \u201cThat system of justice must be fixed and due process must be restored for all Americans, which is exactly what President Trump will do as he returns to the White House with an overwhelming mandate from the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hunter, 54, is no longer facing sentencing for separate federal gun and tax evasion cases that were scheduled for later this month, the New York Post reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n Hunter Biden pleaded guilty in September to nine counts related to evading $1.4 million in taxes and was convicted in June on three federal gun charges for possessing a firearm while addicted to crack cocaine.<\/p>\n Joe Biden asserted on Sunday that his son was \u201cselectively and unfairly prosecuted\u201d and issued a comprehensive pardon covering any offenses committed between January 1, 2014, and December 1, 2024. He initially pledged that he would not pardon his son.<\/p>\n Some Democrats ripped Biden over the pardon.<\/p>\n Colorado<\/span> Gov. Jared Polis blasted the lame-duck decision and accused the chief of his party of putting \u201cfamily ahead of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhile as a father I certainly understand President @JoeBiden\u2019s natural desire to help his son by pardoning him, I am disappointed that he put his family ahead of the country,\u201d Polis wrote<\/a> on the X platform. \u201cThis is a bad precedent that could be abused by later Presidents and will sadly tarnish his reputation.\u201d<\/p>\n Republicans, naturally, also piled on.<\/p>\n \u201cJoe Biden<\/span> has lied from start to finish about his family\u2019s corrupt influence peddling activities,\u201d House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.), whose investigators have uncovered a wealth of evidence to support his accusation over the past two years, said on X.<\/p>\n \u201cNot only has he falsely claimed that he never met with his son\u2019s foreign business associates and that his son did nothing wrong, but he also lied when he said he would not pardon\u00a0Hunter Biden,\u201d he continued.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe charges Hunter faced were just the tip of the iceberg in the blatant corruption that President Biden and the Biden\u00a0Crime<\/a><\/span> Family have lied about to the American people. It\u2019s unfortunate that, rather than come clean about their decades of wrongdoing, President Biden and his family continue to do everything they can to avoid accountability,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n Sen.
